The winter that isn’t

The winter that isn’t

So far winter has eluded us here on the west coast of Sweden. A few days here and there of light snow and frost and that’s about it. Mostly it’s been overcast, damp and cold. On rare occasions the cloud cover breaks and the sun makes a fleeting appearance, but never enough to compensate for the lack of real winter.

Instead of snow we’ve had fog. Fog can lighten things up a bit but it does suck all the colour out. Makes for some interesting photography though. Often the background disappears and closer details become more visible creating a sense of depth, providing that the fog is not too thick, and giving a new perspective on familiar things and places.

Looking back to last year, things were really different. It was cold, there were ice floes on the river in Gothenburg, and we had long periods of snow. Maybe it will come later this year?

Every other weekend we head out to the summer house on Orust, light a fire, eat something nice, and open a bottle of wine. It’s quiet and peaceful. At night we sleep like babies, and in the daytime we take long walks in the woods with Cooper. For a couple of days we can leave the crazy world behind and just be in the moment.

We lost a very dear friend a week ago. Sudden and unexpected, Daniel was far too young and full of life to leave. It’s been extremely hard to take in. Our thoughts are with his grieving family.
