From Rostock it’s the autobahn to Potsdam and the first layover. Our hotel is fresh and modern and close to the city center. We arrive fairly late in the evening. There is some sort of festival going on. There are people everywhere. We walk down to an outdoor bar looking for something to eat but they haver stopped serving food, so we settle for a couple of G&T’s, enjoying the atmosphere before heading back to the hotel to hit the sack.
Day 2 – Heading south on the autobahn.
Day 2 is a long slog down the autobahn to Kochel am See, just south of Münich. A couple of charging stops and a few roadworks, otherwise the traffic flowed fairly well. The German road discipline is hard but fair. Keep right unless you’re overtaking, and keep one eye firmly in the rearview mirror. Never lose your concentration.
Around Münich the the landscape starts to undulate and soon you can see the blue silhouettes of the alps. Kochel am See is a small Bavarian town on the Kochelsee lake. It has several gasthauses and looks like it might be a popular winter holiday resort.
Our hotel is a traditional Bavarian gasthaus and has a biergarten at the front, perfect for a schnitzel and an ice cold beer after a hard days driving.
Together with Cooper we explore the area after dinner. We find lovely hoses, a church, a bunch of sheep, and political academy on top of a hill. It’s a beautiful, warm evening, perfect for a stroll in the foothills to the Alps.
The next morning, after breakfast in the biergarten, we head up the scenic serpentine roads across to Austria and Innsbruck, and then the Brenner Pass through to Bolzano. The weather is hot and the autostrada is thick with traffic and many roadworks. The EV handles it well, the airconditioning keeping us nice and cool. We’re in no rush.
